Insurance

Navigating insurance can be confusing. Here's what you need to know about coverage at our practice.

Our Network Status

We are an in-network provider with:

  • Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield

  • UnitedHealthcare

We are out-of-network with Aetna, Cigna, and Meritain Health.

We do not accept Emblem, Fidelis, Oscar, or UHC Oxford (New York).

Understanding Your Plan

Employer-sponsored plans (PPO, EPO, POS) Many include acupuncture coverage, particularly for pain management. Some plans require a referral from a primary care provider before covering acupuncture — worth confirming before your first visit. If your plan carries a deductible — the amount paid out of pocket before insurance contributes — the full session fee applies until that threshold is met. Being in-network does not mean low-cost; depending on your plan, coinsurance of 20–30% of the allowed amount may still apply.

Health Savings Account (HSA) Funds from an HSA can be used for acupuncture, whether the provider is in-network or out-of-network. HSAs are paired with a High-Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). Because HDHPs carry a high deductible, the full session fee applies until that threshold is met.

Flexible Spending Account (FSA) Acupuncture is an eligible medical expense under FSA plans, allowing pre-tax dollars to cover treatment costs.

Medicare Licensed acupuncturists are not recognized as authorized Medicare providers. Medicare covers acupuncture for chronic low back pain only when performed by physicians, physician assistants, or nurse practitioners with acupuncture training.

Medicaid Acupuncture is not a covered benefit under Medicaid.

Out-of-Network Plans

For patients whose insurance we don't work with directly, we're happy to provide a Superbill — a detailed medical receipt you can submit to your carrier for potential out-of-network reimbursement.

Before You Call Your Insurer

Call the member services number on the back of your insurance card and ask: "Does my plan cover acupuncture from an in-network or out-of-network acupuncturist?"

If the answer is yes, ask for the following:

  • Deductible — Is there an annual deductible, and how much has been met?

  • Referral — Do I need a referral from my primary care provider?

  • Visit limits — How many acupuncture visits are covered per calendar year?

  • Covered diagnoses — Are there specific diagnostic codes required for coverage?

  • Coinsurance — What percentage of the allowed charges will my plan reimburse?

Insurance coverage varies significantly by individual plan. Benefits are not a guarantee of payment; if your plan pays below the maximum allowable amount, your contribution may vary.
